Professional and personal profile
Born in Baghdad, where he studied civil engineering, he earned his doctorate from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris. He taught at several universities and supervised major projects in Iraq before moving to Canada in 1996. In 2004 he returned to his city as Mayor of Baghdad, leading its administration and reconstruction through a period of crisis, then continued his work as an international consultant, writer, and lecturer.
He presides today over Urban Reform Consultant (URC), an engineering firm established in 2006 in the Greater Toronto Area and a member of the Canadian IUCN Committee.
