Baghdad and public service
Elected Mayor of Baghdad on 23 May 2004, Dr. Alaa Mahmoud Al Tamimi led the city through one of the most difficult periods in its modern history. His tenure ended in August 2005.
The mayoralty, 2004 to 2005
He took office at a moment when Baghdad faced damaged infrastructure, institutional instability, limited municipal resources, and severe security challenges. The work was administrative and technical at once: keeping a capital city running, restarting what had stopped, and holding a professional standard through conditions in which little could be taken for granted.
His responsibilities covered municipal administration, reconstruction, public services, infrastructure, planning, and the protection of Baghdad's urban identity.
